Discussion: The work of a curator in contemporary performance

In recent decades, the practice of curating has expanded beyond the field of visual arts into the realm of performing arts. In this event, aimed at art professionals and students, curators working in a museum, theatre, artist-run space and festival will discuss different approaches to programming, the politics of selection and the concrete content of curatorial work.

What does the role of a performing arts curator look like in various contemporary art organizations, and how does the context influence the meaning of the work? What career paths lead to curatorial positions, and what  challenges and strengths are associated with the artist-curator role?

Speakers at the event include Jonna Strandberg, Senior Producer at Kiasma Theatre, Riikka Thitz, Curator of Stage for Contemporary Performance at Helsinki City Theatre, Anna Torkkel, Artistic Director of Ehkä Production and Kutomo Contemporary Art Space, and Emelie Zilliacus, Co-Artistic Director of Hangö Teaterträff Festival. The discussion will be moderated by Maija Mustonen, curator of Mad House Helsinki.

The event is co-organised by Mad House Helsinki and the Contemporary Performance Stage of Helsinki City Theatre.
